Abby Jenne and the Enablers: Music
Fear is the Enemy
(The Abby Jenne Band)
2004-04-10
Abby Jenne and Bart Feller
Bart Feller came to me with a Zappa-esque series of chords and key changes as well as the main idea for the song (do it now-fear is the enemy.) I went home and tried to make sense of all he gave me, knowing that we needed to simplify in order for the message to really be heard. (That and I couldn't really play what he'd written.) Nelson Mandela said something like "Only when we allow our light to shine its brightest do we give others permission to do the same." I guess that's what we're trying to say with this one. Plus Ezra did a great job on this particular song. He makes my butt go BAMP BAMP BAMP.
FEAR IS THE ENEMY
Bart Feller, Abby Jenne
You hide behinds possessions, you’ve been sitting there for years
Your hearts so medicated, you cry smoke instead of tears
So while you’re meditating, why don’t you find your inner balls
Quit blaming those around you, start knocking down your walls
‘Cause what you’re so afraid of is not that you are lame
Your biggest fear is that you’re great and therefore not the same
We fear the complicated, seek the safety of the herd
But when it’s said and done you’ve just ripped off the world.
Don’t keep it in let it out
Don’t turn away, say it loud say it proud
Don’t be afraid just look your fear in the eye
“Cause the worst thing that could happen is you die
Americans are docile, we’re so drunk and entertained
The evil powers like to see their people well restrained
Surf the ocean not the internet, turn off your damn TV
Detox from the media, step outside and be free
Chorus
Forget about the bread, you might as well be dead, if you don’t connect your heart and head
And be who you were meant to
Your life don’t mean a thing if your hearts kept in a sling, if your mind is just sleeping
But only you can make it happen
So what would you be doing if you never had to work
Who is it you’d be now if you weren’t such a jerk
Put the two together man, there’s your place in the world
Stop your masturbating and just kiss that girl
Chorus
And the only thing you can count on is you’re gonna die
